Ever since I was a kid, I’ve had people make comments about my hair or the way I look. On a regular basis, I get a million quizzical looks where people try to figure out what apparently is the ethnic Riddle of the Sphinx: what ARE you? There are “black” beauty salons and “asian” beauty salons and places that cater to a more Jewish population. The Latinas have their products and places over here, the Caucasian women can seemingly go on almost anywhere but it begs the question: have we passed the point where your hair isn’t about your skin color but more about its consistency?
Everyone has basically the same concerns: moisture, manageability, cut, color, and health. If you’re brave enough to step outside your aisle, there are a few universal hair products that cross ethnicities. Journey with me, won’t you?
Everything MoroccanOil Makes – Argan Oil has been used for centuries as a healing agent and there is no better way to calm rough ends, hydrate or generally achieve bouncing, fabulous hair. Oils add essential moisture to your ends to replace the damage you do to your hair so everyone, please do consider this hair industry gold standard. They make a product for whatever is bothering you and whatever it is will work, trust me. (Caveat: if you have keratin in your hair, the shampoos are not sulfate-free)
WEN by Chaz Dean Replenishing Treatment Mist – I recently discovered this slice of magic at a QVC Beauty event and now I can’t live without it. I have watched this natural product TRANSFORM lifeless hair of ALL types into glowing, healthy hair. You can use it to revive your hair between washings or as a leave-in conditioner. Let me tell you why I love it: it will literally revive your blowout after a heavy duty workout. Spray on, smooth down and it’s DONE.
AVON Advance Techniques Lotus Shield Anti-Frizz Treatment – My own personal gold standard when it comes to sleek, practically waterproof hair. Place a dime-sized amount in your hand, run it over wet hair, comb it through and blow it out. Not only will you get the blowout of your LIFE, it will STAY that way for up to three days because moisture will literally roll off. I purchase this product in bulk I love it so much. (Caveat: again, keratin girls, this is not sulfate free.)
The Aveda Damage Remedy Line – Split ends? Dry texture? Heat styling? Chemicals, sweat, urban environments, sun (have I missed any of you yet? I mean EVERYBODY) – you need to use this product. It includes a shampoo, a conditioner and a weekly intensive treatment that strengthens, smooths and moisturizes your locks and it comes with a daily spray that repairs and protects if you MUST keep beating your hair with heat styling.
TRESemme Dry Shampoo – For those of us who are either too busy to shampoo our hair every day (or for those of us who have dry hair and shouldn’t) this little pick-me-up is a slice of joy. It comes in a spray for those of you with oily/straight to normal hair and a mousse for those with normal to dry/thick hair. A little bit goes a long way and it works, yes, on ALL hair types. ((Caveat: again, keratin girls, this is not sulfate free.)
Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo – Never used one of these before? Get involved. This amazing shampoo removes all of the residue that’s left behind by your daily hair regimen – other shampoos, conditioners, deep treatments, styling products – and will leave you with sparkling, healthy hair. I use it every other week and my hair has never looked or felt healthier. You’ll love it, trust me. (Caveat: final time, keratin girls. This is also not sulfate-free.)
So, step outside your aisle. Maybe it’s about how or where you were born but the hair you were born with. Join the sisterhood and give these amazing products a try. We all want to look fabulous, right>
