I’ve always been the kid that wears the thing no one else would wear. The minute I was allowed to dress myself, I used to mix insane combinations of wardrobe items and proudly leave the house, sure people would know I dressed myself. Which wasn’t hard because between the mortified-but-supportive look on my mother’s face and the clashing of prints, colors and textures, it was clear that a five year-old’s fashion sense was at work here. No need to guess.
After years of wearing suits to work in corporate America, I’ve rediscovered this insane love of mixing colors and textures, but now I have a bit more experience and, well, sanity behind the project. There should be a common color between the prints to tie them together and when it comes to mixing textures, there’s a rule of hard and soft that most editors apply which also tends to work very well: something smooth with something rougher or raised. Knits with leather, studs with silk…that kind of thing.
But when you get the right mixture of shapes, textures and colors together, you can create something you find truly magical, which explains my love of this vintage animal print coat from my mom’s wardrobe mixed with some tapestry-printed pants from ASOS and a cashmere sweater from Macy’s.
The central color theme pulling these items together: the Mr. T Starter Kit worth of gold I’m rocking in the photo. I understand Rachel Zoe’s love of covering herself in gold baubles 24/7: it can make even jeans and a t-shirt look amazing.
My mom still laughs at my attempts to dress myself as a little girl, when I would come out in a lace crop top and plaid pants. She thought I was crazy then but turns out I was onto something. I sometimes love a look where it looks like I randomly chose two items in my closet to pair together and it magically works.
Try mixing two items in your wardrobe together and see what happens. The one day you don’t play it safe may be the day you strike wardrobe gold. I guess this is me just taking a note from my beloved Jill Scott: just living my life like it’s golden.
