Beautiful Moments: An Interview with Designer Reem Acra

Truth be told, I’ve been a long-time fan of designer Reem Acra and her gorgeous, feminine designs. With celebs like Olivia Wilde, Sarah Jessica Parker, Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara and Bar Rafaeli wearing her gorgeous red carpet dresses, I’ve literally watched in awe of her understanding of many types of bodies with one central talent: unparalleled glamour and elegance with every, single dress.

Which is why when I was invited to interview the legendary designer in her 5th Avenue showroom, I jumped at the chance. I mean, how many of us get a chance to not only see where the designers live and breathe AND get to speak with the living, breathing designer about the launch of their signature fragrance (seen above in the photo)?

So, on a crisp fall morning, I strolled down Fifth Avenue and ascended in the elevator into the showroom filled with high polished glamour and the legendary designer herself.

Reem is an incredibly glamorous, sensual woman who is completely self-possessed. There’s something so incredible about knowing exactly who you are and exuding that sense of self that fills a room with its presence. She’s witty, warm and I found her to be completely engaging, which is why the interview time turned into girl talk pretty quickly.

Here’s what I learned in my brief time with the legendary designer:

The fragrance is a true reflection of who she is as a person: Reem worked with Pierre Negrin of famed fragrance house Firmanech to reflect her life in the notes of the new fragrance. The Amber notes are from gathering it as a child in Lebanon, as does the notes of Cedar, reflective of the trees that surrounded her as a child.

Reem’s favorite way to start the day: Cafe Blanc, which is 2 tbsp orange blossom essence in hot water. It’s calming and amazing.

The Orange Blossom notes come from her morning beverage of orange blossom essence in hot water which is called Cafe Blanc (which I tried and it is MIND BLOWINGLY GOOD – you have to do this before coffee, it will change your life.)Peonies are part of her aesthetic of her beautiful home. It’s about the study of layering, the mystique of the brand – as you sit with the fragrance, it continues to open and gets better and better throughout the day.

Reem designed the fragrance to help women celebrate their drive and zest for life: Reem describe the woman who wears the fragrance as one “who wants power, that is very confident, wants to be something someone and to be a leader. That no matter where she is in her life career-wise or otherwise, she is driven to make the most of her life.” It’s Reem’s dream that every woman will become this woman. I share her sentiments.

Reem’s Tips for Living Well – Reem is a woman who believes in surrounding herself with luxury and celebrates living well. She describes her existence as having carved a tiny jewelry box inside of New York, that she lives life to the fullest every day, never leaving anything for tomorrow. She says that one of her favorite rituals is to eat a full breakfast every day, taking up the entire table just for herself, filled with vegetarian delights just to suit her.

In a world where it’s easy to lose sight of yourself as a woman who needs to care for herself and to take moments of each day to feed your own desires, it was a pleasure to meet a woman – and experience a fragrance – that wants us to have it all.

The Reem Acra fragrance is available now via Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks.com.
