This Just In: Lupita Nyong’o Is The New Face of Lancome

I don’t normally do the breaking news thing, but when this came across my desk, this is a celebrity item that has to be covered. Actress and current Hollywood “It” girl Lupita Nyong’o is the new face of Lancôme.

There are so many things I could say about the talented actress that have already been said a million times and a million ways: Oscar-winning actress, Yale School of Drama graduate, red carpet darling, gorgeous female, hilarious Instagrammer (if you’re not following her, please rectify that immediately.) What I want to do is recognize the huge moment for women of color that this represents. She’s the first black celebrity to become the face of Maison Lancôme (they’ve previously worked with Latina models Arlenis Sosa in 2009 and Raica Oliveira.) Little girls who have naturally-curly hair, rich skin tones and luscious facial features can relate to the ads they see, starting this spring.

The brand just sent out the press release, in which Nyong’o says, “I am truly honored to join the Maison Lancôme, a brand with such a prestigious history that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for  women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself.”  Beautifully stated.

The actress is in extraordinary company, joining the ranks of brand ambassadors Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penélope Cruz, Emma Watson and Lily Collins. Look for the ads to come starting this summer, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. The images are bound to be stunning, and the products? They’re Lancôme: C’est magnifique.

Like I said, I don’t normally jump on the celebrity news bandwagon, but this announcement is of such great magnitude for women of all ages, something needed to be said. The playing field of beauty is starting to level a bit, ladies. We’re watching some powerful pronouncements coming forth with race and age starting to fade away.

The message is becoming clear: beauty is unique…and  all are welcome.
