There a fashion trend that comes in and out of vogue where women borrow items from menswear and turn it into something tomboyish and chic. While suiting fabrics and tweed coats and caps come into and out of style and the French editors have raised it to an art form (see: Emmanuelle Alt, EIC of Vogue Paris, for a perfect example,) some of us have been pilfering clothes from dudes for years and working them into our wardrobes. My particular jones is for men’s oxfords, particularly if they have that little Polo pony riding across the chest.
I should really just come clean here: I have a history of stealing dress shirts and items from men I’ve known.
There. I feel cleansed. The whole world is filled with possibilities.
I’m kidding. But in reality, I was quite a kleptomaniac in college, and by the time I graduated, I had a whole collection of memorabilia from various flirtations, and quite the collection of Ralph Lauren oxford shirts, which I promptly lost in a string of random moves across the country.
Clearly, I thought I had a handle on the situation until I met Lucky Guy, and damned if I haven’t adopted a love of his shirts almost immediately. The difference this time is that I return them after I wear them. It’s about progress, people.
I honestly think there’s nothing sexier than a woman in a man’s dress shirt, especially when the borrowed item is either framed by her own daily wares or is accompanied by lingerie and nothing but a smile. I’m inclined to remind you that the former can be achieved on a near-daily basis while the latter should be achieved in the privacy of your own home. We’re not out to break any laws in public. What you do behind closed doors is your own business. Go fifty shades of awesome in your own house. I support it.
I’ve always loved the mixture of taking properly-preppy wardrobe items and mixing them with rock and roll-inspired essentials. Waxed denim, a metallic bag and an edgy blazer make this one of my favorite looks. The look is just a good nod to my favorite Gothic lip color, Chanel Vamp, which was also discovered around the same time as my proclivity for stealing men’s dress shirts. It’s the little things, really: a little bit of him mixed with a little bit of you, borrowing something that’s distinctly male and putting a woman’s spin on things.
I admit to wearing the oxford shirts in both manners described above. I mean, eventually I have to give it back, right?
