This photo from The Breakfast Club is one of my favorites. It completely captures how I think women all feel at one moment in their lives. At one minute of our lives, we’ve cultivated one persona and look, but we secretly desire another. It’s also funny because I remember being in the theatre when this movie came out and walking out wanting Ally Sheedy’s haircut and Molly Ringwald’s complete outfit.
Yes, I have always been a little bit off.
As I’m thinking about revamping my look, I’m considering some of my favorite movie transformations. The moments where the girl goes from drab to fab and everyone falls over in amazement. What started for many with Audrey Hepburn’s transformation in Sabrina has now become a cinematic beauty and fashion must-have. We all want to feel like we can let ourselves shine through with just the tweaking of a few different items.
These are three movie makeover moments that have inspired me:
Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy) gets a makeover courtesy of the prom queen, Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald) in The Breakfast Club, and captures the heart of the cute jock, Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez.) My first moment where I thought, “Hmm. A brush. Makeup. Yes, that might be the ticket.” Every once in a while, it just pays to go for pretty.
Billie Jean Davies (Helen Slater) turns into Joan of Arc in The Legend of Billie Jean. It’s such a cheesy movie, but her unlawful transformation into a short-haired outlaw caused many a pretty girl to go all rock and roll and cut her hair. She’s a badass cult hero among my generation. If you’ve not ever seen this movie, WATCH IT. I’m not cutting my hair again, but I love the color and I’ve always loved this punked out scuba top item she’s got going here.
And, of course, the makeover that started most makeovers: Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) get a makeover from Frenchie (Didi Conn) that turns her from a lovelorn “square” into a sexy greaser chick with big hair and Candie’s in Grease. Danny(John Travolta) falls for her and a million of us get inspired to don red lips, curls and a leather jacket attitude.
