Daily Reflection: 5 Movie and TV Clips That Will Make You Feel Brave, Beautiful and Better

I don’t want to give any particular incident any credence, but you know as well as I do that there are a lot of scary things about there right now. From senseless violence to prejudice and bigotry and an entire media seemingly Hell-bent on promoting self-loathing so we’ll buy more products, there seems to be no end to messages out there reminding us that the world is a scary place and there is really very, very much to keep us in the house.

And yet, if we let those forces in, if we give into self-loathing, self-seeking and the fear of losing what we have or never getting what we want, we might as well never leave the house. You must be beautiful and brave, even when it might be easier to just stay inside under the covers and flip the bird to the outside world.

So, I know that when I get down or afraid, there are certain things that make me feel better. Here’s my personal top five:

I LOVE watching this interview with Kate Dillon, one of the top plus-sized models in the game. Gorgeous and honest, this Harvard-educated beauty tells the truth about her journey into extreme weight loss and back to herself again.

The scene in Sex and the City where Carrie Bradshaw becomes fashion roadkill on the runway. And gets on her feet again. In Dolce & Gabbana jeweled panties, no less. Proof positive that you can fall no matter how great you look…and look even better getting up again.

The dance scene from Napoleon Dynamite…because we’ve all felt like the person on stage that nobody gets sometimes. Proof that you should always dance like nobody’s looking.

I’m cheating but the discussion in the cab between George Peppard and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s where he tells her how it is…

And then they bring everything together at the end. Proof that you should believe in yourself, believe in love and never be afraid to be who you are and to embrace your life.

Finally, my favorite movie of all time – and my favorite scene of all time – when Celie finally breaks free of oppression in The Color Purple. I think the clip simply speaks for itself.

You are beautiful. You are free. Don’t let other scare you or make you feel less than.

We must feel better so we can do better.

Stand up, now. Find your footing. Be beautiful. Be brave.
