Daily Reflection: 5 Tips to Overcoming Swimsuit Anxiety

You’ve no doubt heard ad naseum how I’ve been working to get down to a healthy body weight. What I haven’t talked a lot about is my intense fear of being in a swimsuit in public. Let’s go there, shall we?

There was a time years ago when I thought absolutely nothing of stripping down to a two-piece and diving straight into the pool. This was also the time that a couple of days of skipping meals and exercising (I know, horrible way to do it) resulted in a flat stomach. Those days are gone.

The past few years were literally filled with crying jags in dressing rooms and racing at top speed from the towel to the water so no one could see me in a swimsuit. Because there you are, out there for everyone to see. I spent a few summers almost entirely indoors because of it.

Yet, this summer, as I get closer to my ideal weight, I’ve also shed something else: my insecurity about getting into a swimsuit in public. Ladies, here are my tips to help you overcome swimsuit anxiety, something I understand all too well:

KamaliKulture $98 Bill Swimsuit

No one cares if it’s a one-piece or a two-piece – That’s all about you, doll. If your midriff isn’t ready for prime time, don’t show it. My favorite swimsuit of all time now is the Kamali Kulture $98 “Bill” Swimsuit. Retro-inspired, incredibly slimming, and a sure-fire weapon (Norma’s been doing this best-selling style since 1973,) it also comes in a multitude of hues and retails for less than $100. What happens between you and your mid-section is nobody’s business.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body with Active Vitamin D

Cellulite is a fact of life – Since we can’t airbrush ourselves every day, there’s no reason to keep freaking out about whether or not you have uneven skin. Exfoliate, apply some self-tanner (my new personal favorite is Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pad for Body with Active Vitamin D) if you want your skin to look more uniform and move on about your business.

Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara for Lash and Brow

Wear a little waterproof makeup – Gals, waterproof mascara and a great lip gives you an instantly glamorous appeal and it pulls the attention up and down the body. Maybelline Great Lash Clear Waterproof Mascara for Lash and Brow or Very Black will make your peepers pop, while a great red  (MAC Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo, Russian Red or Lady Danger are universally-flattering reds) or a great coral/orange (NARS Lipstick in Niagara) will do the trick. Oh, and get your nails done. That’s an instant confidence builder.

Leave your inner bitch at home – You know what’s less attractive than cellulite or an ill-fitting swimsuit? Cattiness. Don’t deflect your insecurities by talking smack about other people. Gossip actually makes you even MORE self-conscious because you try to make sure that you don’t exemplify the qualities you’re talking about. Save yourself the time and trouble: keep the conversation light and positive. We’re ALL out here trying to do our best. Don’t contribute to the problem.

Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight – The three best cures in the world for anxiety. Dancing around to a great sexy song will help you get into the right head space (“Bitch” by The Rolling Stones always works for me – shown above); getting a little action (I don’t really care how you get it) can be a great confidence booster, and dancing around gives you body confidence.

So, pack the swimsuit, USE SUNSCREEN and have fun at the beach this weekend and all summer. You’re fabulous. Don’t let the half-naked thing bother you. Rock what you’ve got, honey!
