Daily Reflection: Don’t Break Your Own Heart

We have choices every day. We choose what we want to wear, we select what lipstick will make us look our best. We choose how we get to work, what we’ll eat during the day and what kind of music will set the soundtrack to our day. One of the most important choices we can make every day is not to break our own hearts.

What does that even mean, you ask? It feels complex, but it’s really simple. If you’re getting ready to do something you KNOW will bring you unnecessary woe, you’re about to break your own heart. If you’re about to say yes to that thing you’re going to hate yourself for later, if you’re thinking about spending time with that person that makes you feel badly, if you’re about to do something desperate because you don’t want to be lonely – all of those actions lead to you breaking your own heart. Excessive eating, overspending, demanding things from people who are incapable of giving them to you – yep, those are heartbreaking.

Don’t break your own heart. If you’re about to make yourself cry, if you will lie in bed watching reality tv and shoveling down ice cream in regret, just don’t do it. Say no to whatever it is and say yes to something that will rebuild that trust in yourself. Make the next right decision and it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what will happen next. All I can promise you is that it will be better than what was about to happen.

Say no to whatever you’re about to do to break your own heart. There are plenty of people out there who will do that for you. Say yes to anything and everything that will make your heart sing. Don’t be afraid to be happy. It’s so much better than the alternative.
