Daily Reflection: Preparing for New York Fashion Week

The time has come: there’s no grander spectacle than New York Fashion Week, specifically Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (the events specifically held at the tents during New York Fashion Week. ) It starts this Thursday, September 6th.

Eight days worth of shows, presentations, events, after parties and a dizzying array of commitments and attractions that boggle the mind. It’s the time where fashion’s prettiest clothes (and some of the ugliest attitudes) come out in all their glory for eight straight days. As much as it exhausts me and sometimes makes me want to punch people in the throat for being mean just because they can, I absolutely love it.

And this might sound a bit hokey, but as much as the fanfare is hilarious and fun, I understand the significance of every seat, every invitation and every time I get a chance to watch a fashion show. Not as much for me, but for the designers…and you.

The thing is, these shows cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce, and every seat and invitation to a show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week  -and New York Fashion Week overall – represents money in or out of that designer’s pocket and/or the beauty brands who sponsor them. This is where all the attitude is really just sort of annoying to me: we are all there because we have a job to do. I represent you, the readers, and your need to know the trends and clothes in which you’ll invest your hard-earned money this coming season. Which is why this season, I’m attending the shows of some different designers and showing you some things I think you’ll really, REALLY want to see.

There are some new designers on the list this season that I’m very excited for you to see, like Chris Benz, Kimberly Ovitz, DL 1961 Denim, Angel Sanchez, Mathieu Morano and – I’m thrilled to say – Michael Kors. I’m excited to return to some beloved favorites, like DKNY, Libertine, Rebecca Minkoff, Nanette Lepore, Christian Siriano, alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet and Naeem Khan. That’s just a smattering of the schedule. Trust me: the blog will be alive with NYFW/MBFW coverage.

With the help of a HUGE sponsor (more about that tomorrow – I am DYING to tell you, but haven’t been legally allowed to share just yet), I’m going to actually show you what it’s really like to attend New York Fashion Week. I want to take you with me for a truly insider view of what it’s like inside the tents, what it’s like to go backstage and what the clothes truly look like on the runway. I’m so excited to see what’s coming for your wardrobe for Spring 2013.

There will be some great beauty items, too. I’m thrilled to be working with M.A.C. Cosmetics, Maybelline, Kerastase, TRESemme, Essie, John Frieda, Sisley, Jin Soon Choi, and BUTTER: London. Plus, there’s a little meet and greet with celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson that I’ll be attending at the Style Coalition Lounge, so shoot questions over and I’ll be sure to get them answered.

So, with that, I’m taking lots of naps and gearing up the wardrobe. The journey starts with the Lucky Magazine FABB blogger conference first thing Wednesday morning, so follow along for coverage via social media starting Wednesday morning on twitter (@fashionstbeauty) and via the FSB Facebook page and via Instagram (look me up – I’m “fashionstylebeauty” or “kristin booker.”)

This season, I’ll take you with me and we’ll really talk about what you’ll want to buy so you’ll be fashionable, stylish and beautiful come spring. Let’s do it, dolls. Stay tuned for coverage starting Thursday, September 6th!
