I am someone who used to run out of the house completely bare faced, too busy (or so I thought) to apply makeup to my face in hopes of saving precious seconds to get to Goodness Only Knows Where to do Really Important Things. I figured, no one is really paying attention to me. And I put on moisturizer.
The thing is that I got exactly that – no attention. I would stand in line at stores and they could call on the woman next to me. Small children would look through me. I became, in fact, trapped in a cloak of invisibility where I would simply blend into the walls, the ghost of a woman who had simply given up on herself.
People, a life without lipstick is no way to live.
Since discovering that swiping on the right lipstick (and even a little mascara and concealer under the eyes) takes less than three minutes, my life has changed immeasurably. Service is more swift. Cabs will stop more quickly. People are more apt to smile. HOT guys will check me out. If good clothes open all doors, then the right lipstick is the red carpet through that door, a passageway into All The Right Things.
Putting on a little lipstick (or lip gloss if that’s your thing) is that extra second of effort that gives your face a boost. It’s curtains on the windows, it’s a duvet cover on the comforter. That little pop of color gives you an extra lift in your posture, a swing in your step because know that you look pretty.
The right lipstick draws eyes to the mouth, focusing everyone’s eyes on what you have to say. It says that you care about yourself, that you can handle your life, that you’re in charge.
The best thing? Good lipstick formulas range from about $5 all the way up to prestige brands that cost $40-ish. Every single lipstick featured here I will stand behind in their formulations. I own them all and – here’s a beauty editor admission – I have purchased every single one of these lipsticks on my own. If I will spend my money on them, they’re the best. Period.
Every day, take a moment to seal a look of confidence. Put on a little bit of your favorite lipstick. Kiss your old invisible self goodbye and embrace all the good things coming your way. Add an extra kiss for me. I’m proud of you.
But most important, show that you’re proud of yourself.
