Daily Reflections: 5 Things Madonna Can Teach Us About Life

On the heels of last night’s Super Bowl performance, I am still reeling. As a self-proclaimed Biggest Madonna Fan On The Planet, I’m obviously biased, but it got me thinking about all the things Madonna has meant to me over the years.

Let’s not get it twisted. This is not an flawless person, but I think that’s what makes her so perfect. Madonna lives to flaunt her talents and mistakes in front of the world. One of fashion’s most fearless pioneers and a seven-time Grammy-winning pop legend, let’s talk about the lessons that the pint-sized dynamo Madonna Louise Ciccone has to teach us:

People can only use things against you if you let them. When Madonna first became famous, nude photographs taken of her by Lee Friedlander in 1979 (for which she received a $25 model fee) surfaced of her and were quickly purchased by Playboy and published in 1985. When faced with press questions about these “scandalous” photos, she replied, “So?” Proof positive that if you don’t think there’s a problem, there probably isn’t one.

Don’t go for second best. Madonna has famously said, “I’m tough, I’m ambitious, and I know exactly what I want. If that makes me a bitch, okay.” I don’t really have to embellish this any further. Go for the top spot in whatever race you’re running, people.

Look around. Everywhere you turn it’s calling. Sometimes that thing that you really want – a new look, the ability to make something about your life a little more fabulous – is really calling you to explore it. Don’t be shy. Give it a go. Explore your love of fashion, try a new mascara and bat those gorgeous eyelashes, go out in full drag to the grocery store. As she says, don’t just stand there, let’s get to it. Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it.

Express yourself, don’t repress yourself. We’ve already had this discussion here on the site, but honestly, never dim your light to suit others. Be everything you want to be and don’t be sorry. Express yourself, don’t repress yourself.

Music makes the people come together. Love her or hate her, you can’t help but shake your groove thing when her tunes come on. Madonna, simply by being true to herself, has shown all of us what’s it’s really like to live your life out loud and we’re united in our inability to turn away from whatever she’s doing. So, turn up the music, get inspired to do you thing and let ’em watch you work.

Happy Monday!
