Dedicated Post: How to Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine

The goal: a bathroom and makeup vanity that is clutter-free and only filled with products that will love you back. Photo courtesy of apartmenttherapy.com

This dedicated post has been produced as part of my partnership with Simple Skincare. The opinions within, however, are strictly my own.

One of the beautiful things about spring is that sense of renewal. Out with the old and in with the fabulous, I say. From cleaning out your closet to reorganizing your bathroom, there are plenty of things you can do to open up your space for the coming of all sorts of fun in the sun.

This season, it’s time to clean up the products you use to get gorgeous. Here are a few of my favorite tips on how to spring clean your beauty routine:
Empty your makeup bag – Dump your entire makeup bag out on an old T-shirt and go through every single thing in it. As a general rule, if you can really smell a strong scent from a product (or it doesn’t work as well) it’s time to get rid of it. Take mascara:  if the wand starts to smell like gasoline, it’s too old and you need to throw it away. Always make a plan to repurchase the products you use all the time, then consider adding new ones. Bright lipstick will be all the rage this season, so invest in a good pop of coral, tangerine or bright pink for an instant upgrade.

Go through your makeup drawers and bins – If you hoard makeup like most of us do (and this goes double if you have a beauty blogger-type closet with multiple shelves) you MUST go through and throw away products that have started to separate, congeal or have otherwise expired.

Clean out the shower– Any washes or lotions that have started to go hard or get a waxy consistency need to go in the trash. Ditto for products you never use (that jar of body mud that has now turned into a brick, for example.)Go for a milder body cleanser for spring to give your skin a break, and use two body lotions – a light one for every day and a rich body cream for after sun exposure or at night. Hint: this is also a great time to switch out your shower curtain liner if you have one.

Switch up your skincare – If you have sensitive skin, now is the time to through your skincare routine and get rid of anything that has harsh chemicals, is old and starting to break down (if you can smell a strong odor, it’s probably bad.) Then it’s time to upgrade with some great facial skin products, like a good sensitive skin cleanser to nourish skin like Simple Skincare Refreshing Facial Wash Gel, a nourishing toner to leave skin clean and refreshed like Simple Skincare Soothing Facial Toner, a good eye cream to soothe and relax tired eyes like Simple Skincare Soothing Eye Balm, and a great moisturizing day cream with SPF, like Simple Skincare Vital Vitamin Day Cream with SPF 15.

And that’s it! Be sure to dispose of all the garbage and add some great special touches, like a vase of flowers for the sink, great-smelling hand soap and maybe some bright drawer liners. Make your beauty routine – and everything that surrounds it – as nourishing as the products you use on your face. It’s just that simple.
