Fashion Feature: How to Shop For Fall Dresses – An Interview with Bluefly’s Sandy Sahn

It might seem to be slightly premature to think about fall shopping as we’re still sweating through record high temperatures, but savvy shoppers know that a little bit of planning can help you choose just the right pieces from a whole slew of trends. With designers sending the message loud and clear that ladylike glamour is back in full force for fall, it’s no surprise that dresses will come center stage this season. Not only are they the epitome of feminine allure, but they’re an incredibly easy wardrobe solution.

Since some of us (ahem, me) are slightly challenged when purchasing dresses, I decided to ask an expert. Meet Sandy Sahn, Dress Buyer for online shopping giant Considering this is a woman who buys dresses for a living, I thought she might be able to give us some advice on trends and how to shop for one of this season’s hottest trends.

FSB: What are the hottest dress trends for fall?
Sandy Sohn: I’m all about Drapey Dresses right now. If it’s Grecian-inspired, flowy, and bold in color, j’adore! Leather sheaths, bold embellished minis, and anything with cut-outs all tie for 2nd place.

FSB: What are some tips for dress shopping for your body type? What about skin tone?
Sandy Sohn: You gotta know your body and what works for you. First of all, know your measurements. Ask your friend or local tailor to help you measure your bust, waist & hips. I also advise the “drapey” dress – draping looks great on EVERY body type. As far as skin tones go, if you’re pale, I say avoid strong, harsh colors—muted tones & pastels will make your skin look creamy, instead of pasty. If you have darker skin, go bold with primary colors or stark whites.

FSB: What are your must-haves at various price points?
Sandy Sohn: There are so many options! Here are three of my favorites:

Under $100 – I’m obsessed with this Wyatt Royal Blue Strong Shoulder Dress ($88) in every way—the strong shoulder detail and draping techniques…love love LOVE!

Under $200 – I would live in this something like this Andrew Marc “Dominique” Black Jersey Dress ($158) every day with leggings—love the back zip detail!
Under $300 – In the wise words of Rachel Zoe, “I loves me a sequin!” This ABS by Allen Schwartz Cocoa Sequined Halter Belted Dress ($219) is such an elegant statement for evening. Talk about glamour!

FSB: What are some tips to shopping Bluefly, especially for people who might be nervous shopping for dresses online?
Sandy Sohn: Take advantage of all the search tools on the site! If you have no clue—or just a vague idea of—what you’re looking for, let the category headers guide you; e.g. if you’re in the market for a dress, start by clicking “women”, then “dresses”; then narrow down from there using the list of options. If you know exactly what you want, enter the product name in the search box and the result should pop up instantly. We’ve also added a new feature that enables you to view the products of multiple designers, in multiple sizes and colors, at specific price points. And, honestly, if you have time, browsing’s always fun!

So when you’re making that pre-Fall shopping list, be sure to add dresses to your list, then head over to Bluefly and check out their spectacular selection of Fall Dresses, just recently updated for your shopping enjoyment. Take Sandy’s tips and you should be glam, gorgeous and on trend for the upcoming season.
