There’s nothing like holding a beautiful book written by a friend. As someone with a manuscript still in progress, I think that supporting someone who has actually gone ahead and finished the job is absolutely crucial, particularly when the book is THIS good.
If you’ve been reading my site for a while, you know that I have a soft spot in my heart for all things Donna Karan, particularly the musings of her powerhouse PR presence, Aliza Licht, otherwise known to all of us in the Twitterverse as @dkny (“DKNY PR Girl.) This fiery redhead is a presence in the fashion and social media industry, whipping off witticisms on social media while she quite deftly handles the public relations for one of the greatest American designers in history. She’s penned Leave Your Mark, a 288-page journey into how she got there and how you can get a little of that career magic for yourself.
Aliza describes the book as a mentorship, and if you’re just getting started (or you know someone who’s about to graduate who wants to get into the industry,) it’s filled with pithy advice on how to, well, make your mark. For those of us in the industry, it’s a great reality check (and Lord knows we need it more than ever.) Also, I don’t find that you have to just be getting started — or even to be in our industry — to benefit from Aliza’s experience. Aliza is a smart cookie, a driven and passionate power player, and a woman who pulls no punches in telling you exactly what she thinks. I’d dare say she’s a role model for the rest of us.
Plus, some of the dishy-er moments from her career described in here make for a great read. The Devil Wears Prada has nothing on her.
If you’re looking for a great read to take with you on your next trip, or even a new book to sink into while you enjoy the change of seasons, this is one I’d recommend. Not just because I call Aliza a friend, but because I have first-hand experience working with this dynamo, and I can vouch for the fact that all the power player advice in this book is absolutely true. She is sharp, beautiful, and filled with great advice. I’d suggest most of us listen.
We all deserve to leave our mark.
