Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Bill Blass Spring 2011 Collection

Designer Bio: We’re all familiar with the departed genius of American design giant Bill Blass, who is unfortunately no longer with us. The house has seen some trouble relaunching in the past and has now settled on worldly designer Jeffrey Monteiro (born in the Middle East, raised in Australia) to revamp the brand. The talented designer certainly has the pedigree for the task: he’s worked for such names as Mayle, Derek Lam and Tod’s.

The Collection: Monteiro has definitely absorbed the DNA of Blass’ classic American sportswear aesthetic, so the legendary ladies-who-lunch who adored the brand will have no problem finding familiar silhouettes and color palettes but the designer has certainly put his own stamp on the line, with edgy seamwork, gowns in dramatic diagonal stripes, open weave dresses seemingly dragged from the nets of Nantucket. The nautical-inspired collection is a great homage to classic seaside chic, but with a twist for the new generation.

Expect classic staples like navy, white, red, black and gold mingled with more modern cuts and a dash of daring. Monteiro respects the legend of the man whose name is on the label, but he’s determined to spread his own wings underneath the label. Judging from this wearable collection, he’s well on his way and it will be interesting to see his progression.
