As I prepare to head to the tents tomorrow, I had a chance to talk to designer Son Jung Wan, otherwise known as the “DVF of Korea.” I had a chance to catch her fall 2011 collection last season and was BLOWN AWAY by her amazing designs. I took the opportunity to interview her for what we’re about to see. Here’s what she had to say:
FSB: What was/were the main inspiration(s) for the collection? Any particular experiences, moods, textiles, photos?
Son Jung Wan: Capri, Italy was my inspiration. The colors of the Blue Grotto and Capri Landscape are where I drew inspiration. The shapes of the Faraglioni rocks, the steps to La Fontalina beach, the Piazzetta are all in the lines of the collection.
FSB: What particular details about the collection make you most proud? Is there a favorite piece or a particular treatment/pattern that you’d like to share?
SJW: There are several dresses that I just LOVE. Although I could see women wearing all of the clothes, there is one hand-dyed blue dress with python detail that brings a smile to my face every time I see it.
FSB: Who is the woman that wears your clothing?
SJW: She is fun, chic and always entertaining at a party.
FSB: What’s it like putting together a runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week?
SJW: I love the process. The casting new faces, the look of the show, the music, all of the details and everyone getting so excited about watching the collection come to life in such an amazing setting as Lincoln Center.
FSB: If you could give one piece of advice to every woman out there when she’s thinking about creating the perfect wardrobe, what would it be?
SJW: Be smart, be glamorous.
FSB: After the show is over, where will go to celebrate? What are some of your favorite places to go when you’re not working? (Restaurants, spas, vacation destinations, etc.)
SJW:I will head back to Korea after the show. But in a few months my husband and I will take our son on vacation. We love Paris in the Spring, New York in the Fall and of course Capri in the early summer.
