I’d be lying if I said that this isn’t one of the invitations that makes me almost cry every season I receive it. There is something about the white glove world of the Ralph Lauren lifestyle that envelops you. It’s an invitation to a life filled with impeccable tailoring and luxury down to the very last detail.
Because when it comes to the young man from the Bronx who created this life years ago, it’s about knowing exactly who you are and relishing every detail of your life reflected back to you, a life that rises to greet you. Lauren is a man of impeccable taste. Seated at his show (like many of the greats, he doesn’t believe in standing – if you’re an invited guest, you have a seat to see the clothes properly) you are treated with respect in his world. I relish this respect every season.
This season’s presentation started with the familiar strains of the theme to PBS Masterpiece Classics’ smash hit Downton Abbey. From the manor born is the Ralph Lauren woman again this season, with reference from the WWI-era drama shown as menswear-inspired separates that started with buttoned-up tweeds, cashmere and wool for a country wardrobe, perfect for walking about the property…
The collection then emerged through the day, with looks perfect for running to town – suiting pieces that are all business in gorgeous fabrics (the glenplaid items are particularly rich and smart.)
The borrowed-from-the-boys looks were incredibly beautiful and feminine, sharply tailored to the eye but soft to the touch. A welcome, well-heeled change from some of the grittier looks we’ve seen on the streets as of late.
Let me be clear about my particular lust for this black beaded leather jacket – I will have it. I don’t exactly know how yet, but it will happen.
The evolution then progressed to proper pre-dinner looks – velvet suits and smoking coats, a ocelot-printed shearling coat. We were transportedback to a time when you dressed for cocktails and then changed for dinner. Leather, cashmere – fabrics that made you want to cozy up to the fire and discuss the day. ALL spectacular looks.
The final looks are what made you heart skip a beat – the eveningwear was nothing short of monumental. Lauren crafted evening gowns that simply looked like they were poured onto the wearer – fluid, liquid works of art. The dresses I’m showing you are great examples of the gilded glory that Lauren displayed, but a particular dress that isn’t shown (the back of it is displayed in the top right corner of the photo above ) was so beautiful that it made me cry: a black silk velvet evening dress with a beaded collar that when the dress made its way down the runway, you saw that the back was draped with swinging crystals. Breathtaking.
Calling out for the modern day gentlewoman and red carpet class act, this collection is a nod to the taste of those who demand it and contains whipsmart details from another time but perfect for an era that is crying out for more class and decorum – right now. We need people who can see and create awe-inspiring beauty with a nod to civility to lead the charge. Let this collection from Ralph Lauren for Fall 2012 light the way.
