There are certain invitations for which a girl waits a lifetime. The right guy asking you to dance, a job you’ve always wanted, and for us fashion gals, a chance to watch a true master of design and construction work his magic. For me, one of those dreams came true this season as I was invited to watch the Carmen Marc Valvo Spring 2012 Collection presentation.
Staged as a gorgeous strolling parade of models through the NASDAQ Marketsite in Times Square, editors, buyers and celebrities alike took our seats to watch the collection unfold while sipping champagne (the man can throw a party, what can we say?) The collection was a study in classic American style with a decidedly glamorous edge.
We’re talking a return to tasteful, well-constructed, beautiful dresses and separates that seem to have emerged from the closets of Truman Capote’s famed Swans. A time where the cover-up to the bathing suit had to be as glamorous as the suit, when people dressed for dinner and cocktail attire had a more strict dress code and started promptly at 5 pm. The collection was refreshing, tasteful and positively lovely.
The thing about Carmen Marc Valvo’s clothing is that you can see the love in the painstaking details on every garment. Every sequin, every bead, every stitch, ever single pleat is deliberate and created with such love it takes your breath away. He’s a red carpet and socialite favorite for a reason: every garment is as special as the moment you’ll have when you wear it.
The collection was filled with beautiful pieces for a modern American woman who loves the clean, classic lines of American fashion. A-line cocktail dresses, breathtaking gowns, bathing suits that could easily go straight to dinner with the addition of a skirt or evening trousers and complimentary cover-ups covered in beautiful beading. It’s a wardrobe for a woman with places to go and be seen.
The color palette was simple and very elegant – black, white and camel were shown with a collection that was so strong the final four looks brought tears to my eyes. I’m telling you, it was lovely and I expect to see many of these lovely pieces on celebrities (and those of us who just love beautiful clothes) on the red carpet and real life this Spring. I hope these photos bring you even half a glimpse into the talent of this amazing designer.
