One of the main reasons I love Donna Karan so much is that she has always had an infinite understanding of, and design empathy towards, what it’s like to be a woman. Where I can show you a thousand different lines and spout all sorts of over-the-head fashion references, I can always report on something that Donna Karan does with phrases that you’ll know and like: “wearable,” “works with your existing wardrobe,” “consistently works with your body,” and “instant style upgrade” come to mind.
The reason Casual Luxe was created was to bridge a wardrobe need for her clients. Where DKNY hits the more youthful city chicster and where Donna Karan’s signature line is geared toward the more established woman who demands a designer wardrobe that works as hard as she does, Casual Luxe is a mid-range line of separates for the urban warrior on the go, sort of “pack-it-and-wear-it” items that will unroll and look amazing now matter where you are. It’s one of my favorite lines to come around in a long time and it makes me happy every time I see it.
For the Donna Karan Casual Luxe Spring 2012 Collection, the line continues to show separates that will look amazing racing around the city or thrown into a duffel bound for the Hamptons or the beach. The collection has a raw feel with fabrics that have that warrior edge, but all the pieces are so refined they speak luxury from the moment you set eyes on them. From dresses to campshirts, twill cargoes, nylon jackets and ponchos, horn pendants and cuffs for a nod to her current artistic love affair with her travels to Haiti as part of Urban Zen’s initatives – these are clothes that feel soft to the touch but speak of the strength of the woman underneath.
It would be impossible for me to describe which pieces I loved more than the others, so please peruse these photos for a view of some of my favorites.
For those of us who are on our way everywhere next season, we’re all going to need to travel light, which means that we should all try living Casual Luxe.
