Before the Show: Billy Reid always shows at Milk Studios, the downtown hip venue co-sponsored by MAC Cosmetics. We ascended the elevator to an event space that was instantly transformed into a Southern plantation area, with male models reclining on weathered doors and standing on plank wood porches. As a Southerner myself, it warmed my heart but as a fan of fashion, the clothes made my heart sing.
The Collection: Billy Reid is a Southern designer inspired by historical references, so the clothes are infused with his love of classic mens tailoring and proper dress. Seersucker and weathered cotton lived alongside bow ties and braces that came from another time and another place – and I love it. Listen, folks, I’m a fan of men dressing like men. Billy Reid cuts like a master tailor without the clothes looking fussy. They’re soft, completely wearable and impeccably stylish without being stuffy. Denim, leather accessories, striped cotton shirts, bow ties – every piece of the collection belongs on some man in your life. Want to look sharp without looking slick, kind of like the man who would order a whiskey neat instead of a martini? Billy Reid is your man.
Trendspotting: Khaki and desert neutrals mimicked the color scheme from the womens collections of the season. I’m also a sucker for a bow tie so I hope this catches on quickly.
Overall impression: As a longtime fan of the menswear designer, I’m always inclined to tell the gentlemen in my life to invest in at least one piece from the designer and this collection is no exception. As ZZ Top once said, “Every girl’s crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man.” If that’s the case, we’ll be falling all over ourselves for Billy Reid-wearing gents this spring.
