As a huge fan of Michael Jackson, I’m always excited when one of his songs comes on. Michael, no matter what you may have thought of him, influenced pop music and culture forever. He was a creative force of nature, a very complicated person, and an undisputed musical genius. As a fashion fan, he also had quite the flair for the dramatic when it came to clothes. I love anyone who loves a good sequin, people. He had me at the glitter pants from the “Off the Wall” video.
As a little kid, I wanted to meet him so badly. People used to tell me that I looked like Janet (which still sends me into fits of giddiness, even though we look pretty much nothing alike) and I thank them for their kindness, for that moment of furthering my delusion that I was The Lost Jackson. I had the glove, I had the Thriller vest, I watched with delight as he moonwalked into history at the Motown 25th Anniversary celebration. I could moonwalk, I could spin, I could borrow my mother’s sequined jacket (which is what he did right before he took the stage for that iconic moonwalk moment) and my father’s black tuxedo pants and strike the pose. Michael was magic, and magic is something we all need a bit more of in our lives.
For this week’s Monday Motivation Mix, I wanted to pay homage to one of my personal style icons, the amazing Mr. Jackson, by creating a power cardio mix of some of his best tunes along with the music of some of the artists he influenced. This week, you’ll find Justin Timberlake, Usher, Beyonce, Madonna and a couple of other surprise guest stars in the mix along with remixes of some of the Jackson 5’s greatest hits. Whether you take it to the gym, the streets, or just dance around your house like I’m doing right now, let’s celebrate magic this week, just like Michael would have wanted us to.
