For anyone not alive or cognizant of the 1980’s, you missed out on a delight of a New Wave band, The Motels. A band that rose to stardom early in the decade, they released five albums, two top ten singles and some fabulous videos on MTV (back when it actually played videos,) including one of my all-time favorites shown below, “Only The Lonely.”
Truth? Lead singer Martha Davis was EVERYTHING to me as a kid. I used to steal my grandmother’s veiled hats and my mother’s velvet dresses to try to recreate this film noir look from the video. I’m sure there are lost Polaroids of my first fashion styling attempts. For the fact that those childhood mishaps are somehow lost, I weep.
But now Fall 2011 is coming around and I think this look has amazing merit. Perhaps the veiled pillbox hat is a bit much but the curve-hugging dress with the sweetheart neckline and the brooch placed at mid-waist? I could rock that. I’m also officially calling opera gloves as officially “in,” especially when they can show off a gorgeous glittering bangle like the one Martha’s wearing in the video. I live for this.
Although I recommend a much more gentle hand at contouring the cheeks than was used in the 80’s (“restraint” wasn’t necessarily the word of the day when it came to beauty back then,) I would tell you that the power smoky eye and defined lip is coming your way in a hurry when it comes to nighttime glamour. Oh yes, it’s no longer lips or eyes – if you dare to do both, you might be applauded.
Today, I salute the gorgeous Martha Davis and her iconic style. Here’s how I’d get the look:
