Anyone who knows me is aware of my near encyclopedic knowledge of music. I collect it, I watch hours of video on YouTube, I live for people to help me discover and rediscover old and new favorites. I was there front and center on August 1, 1981 to watch the channel watch with its first video (“Video Killed The Radio Star” by The Buggles, for the record) and I’ve been a fan ever since. Videos became my first real view into the world of fashion and style and the women who appeared on the channel and they shape my style even today, especially videos of The Pretenders and their front woman, lead singer Chrissie Hynde.
Long, lanky and with a singing voice like a slinking, snarling cat, Hynde became an anti-hero for those of us looking for a sexy bad girl with whom to affiliate. Men were drawn to her but were a little afraid of her and women were piling on the black eyeliner and cutting our hair in jagged edges to look like her. A little girl from Akron, Ohio, who saved her money from Kent State to move herself to London and inevitably Paris to become queen of the New Wave scene, Hynde has always marched to the vibe of her own guitar strings.
