New York Fashion Week Diary: A Few Thoughts Before We Get Going

2011-08-Mercedes-Benz-Fashion-Week-Tents

Ah, the tents at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, site of where I will be most of the week from tomorrow through February 14th.

This January, when registration for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week opened, I jokingly said it must be akin to the process of childbirth. Meaning that you get to the end of it, you swear that you’re never going to do THAT again, and then suddenly you’re looking at all the pretty items when it winks at you and says that it’s time to go again. Suddenly, you’re like, well, maybe just one more time, for moments like the ones I captured at Ralph Lauren last time:

This is my 8th time at the tents for Fashion.Style.Beauty. When I started the blog in 2009, it was a dream and fondest wish of mine to make it to the tents, to be invited to see the clothes that I’d been reading about for so long. I got that wish in the first year and each season, when the invitations come in, I feel just as grateful. I don’t take any of it for granted. Every single invitation means something. Those chairs cost money. Each seat is an investment they’ve made in you and what you have to say about that designer. I’m honored each time one of them believes my viewpoint – and all of you who read it- is important.

I think this time it’s about showing you what it’s really like to be there. I think over the past few seasons, you’ve gotten a chance to see what the clothes look like, but you can see that anywhere. This season, I will try to show you – as best I can, sometimes the conditions are complicated – what it’s really like to be at the shows.

This is the lobby of The Empire Hotel, where the Style Coalition Lounge is located this season, and where a lot of my off-duty time will be spent filing stories, eating and trying to soothe my tired muscles. Image courtesy of The Empire Hotel.

There are also tons of activities around the shows that happen. There are a million lounges where there are special programming (the Style Coalition lounge seems to be where the good stuff is at this season.) I’ll be heading over to the Four Seasons for a shoecam (to highlight my new fun footwear that won’t ruin my feet, aka studded leather biker boots.) It’s a whirlwind of activities and no one ever has time to eat or sleep and at the end we look like Hell but, hey, that’s really kind of what it’s all about.

I also usually never tell you the shows you can expect, but I’m doing it right now. Our schedule, dear friends, is as follows:

  • Erin Barr
  • La Perla
  • Kate Spade
  • Carmen Marc Valvo
  • DKNY
  • DKNY Menswear
  • Donna Karan
  • Nautica Menswear
  • Monika Chiang
  • Ruffian
  • Christian Siriano
  • The Heart’s Truth Red Dress Show
  • Alexandre Herchcovitch
  • Monique Lhuillier
  • Catherine Maladrino
  • Trina Turk
  • Mathieu Morano
  • alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet
  • Reem Acra
  • Michael Kors
  • Nanette Lepore
  • Clover Canyon
  • Ralph Lauren

And there will be tons of surprises and things in between. But, yeah – it’s a BUSY eight days. That’s not counting backstage beauty coverage. 🙂

But in the end, it’s the fact that my heroes like Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan are going to give me a chance to see my dreams come to life in person. And for that, I’ll gladly sacrifice a few days of sleep.

Starting tomorrow! Here we go!
