DKNY is really one of the most “New York” collections presented during Fashion Week. The heart of the city, the culture, the very architecture of what we do to survive here on a daily basis is embedded in its DNA. It was originally created as the sort of younger companion to the sophistication of the Donna Karan Collection, a nod to Karan’s daughter Gabby back when it began. It’s youthful in spirit and filled with essentials for the woman who’s emerging to her rightful place of taking over the world.
That looks a lot different than it has in past years. DKNY is changing with the times, and it’s duly noting that the hipster sensibilities that have overtaken our culture have altered the way its core customer dresses. The young woman of today likes to mix things up. They live life out loud in brash colors. They’re in your face and they want to be seen. They’re not afraid of you. You can take your trends and your “can’t wear white after Labor Day” rules and stick ’em. They like sparkle, they like graphic…they’re here and they want to be heard.
And the brand has answered the call, turning out a collection that’s not about being timid and accepted. It’s bold, it’s bright, filled with geometric prints and vivid colors that shine like the lights on the landscape of my beloved city. Even the embroidery isn’t meant to blend into the piece; it stands on top of prints boldly demanding to be noticed, even when glinting in the light from clothes of the same color.
I’m also a fan of the layering used in the show. I like dresses over dresses, boxy tops and sweaters over flippy skirt hems that bounce over a column dress or skirt. I like that solids have athletic mesh details and everything sort of shines without being, well, shiny. It’s time for a change, and the change has come. It’s refreshing. I dig it.
The gallery below shows my favorites from the 38 piece collection shown on Sunday. I think you should do what comes naturally with anything from DKNY, which is to mix it in with your existing wardrobe as the Piece That Pops. You ready to make a statement? Here’s your chance. The time is now. These are the clothes.
