I admit that I am not the girliest of girls, or at least that what the tomboy in me who still loves to climb trees and laugh at dirty jokes would like to think. I love denim, I love rocker leather, but every once in a while, something hyper-feminine and lovely will catch my eye, and suddenly everything goes all soft and hazy and I’m brushing My Little Pony’s hair and planning a boudoir filled with All Things Pink.
You might even hear a “Squee!” come out of my mouth. God, did I just say that out loud?
There are only two wardrobe items that can usually elicit this type of response from me: one is great lingerie, and the other is a great pair of shoes. While everything from the ankles up on me is usually very rocker glam, I do love a good feminine shoe, and there’s really no shoe designer more in tune with girlish glamour at the moment that Britain’s Charlotte Dellal and her line, Charlotte Olympia.
I love that these shoes speak to the dilemma many of us have all the time: sinner or saint? Well, why not both? The shoe has plenty of lustful attitude with leopard-printed calf hair and a vampy pointed toe, but just when you think the shoe is all hair-grabbing sexuality there it is on the toe: a pom pom of ultra virginal tulle with feminine blue leather trim to match. The midi heel that won’t cause you to cry while wearing them seals the deal for me: these shoes are a keeper.
Good girl? Bad girl? Girly girl? Rocker tomboy? It matters not: these shoes are a celebration of femininity, so, you know, let’s party.
