If you ever have the chance to visit me at home, you will discover that I have quite the obsession with scented candles. It all started with a small votive someone gave me in college and it has now turned into near hoarding. Well, it would be hoarding if I kept them around long. Truth is, candles burn in my bedroom all year long and if things with wicks and wax are deemed good enough to burn in my home, they’re used pretty quickly.
Hence my love for NEST Fragrances candles, which you will see pretty much everywhere. Created by the genius Laura Slatkin, the woman knows how to architect a fragrance and a candle that sets a mood and burns long without being too terribly strong. NEST candles are created to fill a room with fragrance that feels warm and enveloping, like a hug from someone you love. Craftsman glass containers, scents created with the top noses in the fragrance world – these candles are sheer perfection when it comes to home fragrance.
My current favorite candle is Black Fig & Honey, a gorgeous black fig accord that’s merged with cognac, madagascar vanilla and, of course, honey. The scent is universally pleasing (i.e. men will like it) and just makes a room smell warm and inviting. I love that even though the scent is based on spices and foods, it doesn’t smell overly sweet or thematic. Think luxury rather than lunch and you’ve got the right idea.
Quick Tip: Straight from the folks at NEST: when you first burn a candle, let the wick(s) burn for at least an hour straight or until you can see that first pool of wax formed evenly across the top of the candle. This ensures that the wick(s) will always burn – and the scent will always spread – more evenly.
