I LOVE getting reader questions. This one is a beauty question about color-safe shampoos:
“Hi! Just curious, what’s your fave, medium-priced COLOR SAFE shampoo? I’m in a shampoo slump & thought I’d ask the expert :-)” – Liz, West Hills, California
Thanks for the question, Liz! First thing I want to say is that you’ll want to be very certain about following your colorist’s instructions TO THE LETTER when it comes to washing your hair after a color service. Letting the color set is really important. You don’t want to pay all that money for rich, gorgeous color and then go wash it down the drain.
Per your request, I have three favorite color-safe shampooes that will serve, protect and enhance your particular shade:
Redken – Redken, in my humble opinion, really has the corner market on salon results that are mind-blowing at home. I’m always going to recommend Redken Color Extend Shampoo ($16), which works on ALL hair colors (including all shades of red) and cleanses without stripping or fading. The scent is delicious and it’s my top recommendation. As a matter of fact, I would tell you to pick up the entire Color Extend Hair Care line for maximum benefit.
Ted Gibson Beauty – I’ve also personally had a great experience with Ted Gibson products, specifically the Individual Color shampoos that not only cleanse gently but deposit little bits of temporary color to help boost your shade. The Master of All Things Fabulous Hair has given us Glimmering Gold (blondes,) Brazen Brown and Captivating Copper, which each cost $24.95 and will save you unwanted tears and color running down the drain.
Aveda – Finally, if you’re looking for a nourishing shampoo that’s sulfate-free AND helps protect color, look no further than Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo. A genius formula from one of the best hair care companies out there, it uses natural ingredients (and an intoxicating aroma, as per all Aveda products,) to not only protect your hair in the shower but to help fortify it against environmental damage and sun fading. It’s my most expensive recommendation at around $35, but it’s a gold standard for a reason.
Hope this help! Protect that color investment wisely, Liz. It’s one of the best a woman can make.
