Monday Music Style Icon: Michelle Pfeiffer in The Fabulous Baker Boys

My freshman year of college, my friends Beth and Mandy decided it was time to see a movie. You know how it goes: bored, Saturday night, no big party plans, and very little money. We ventured into the small cinema down the street from my small college in Charlotte and decided on a little arthouse movie. That movie was The Fabulous Baker Boys, and that actress is one of my favorites of all time, a lovely lady named Michelle Pfeiffer.

That night turned something on in all of us. Beth and I became singularly obsessed with getting this red dress from the New Year’s Eve scene, complete with oh-so-wrong-but-oh-so-right giant snowflake earring. If you’ve never seen this movie, I beseech you to rent it. It’s a sleeper hit, but Pfeiffer’s hot mess with a heart of gold, a character named Susie Diamond, has remained one of my favorite characters of all time. This is the killer musical moment where she sings “Makin’ Whoopee” with a smoldering Jeff Bridges accompanying on piano.

Susie’s scrappy nature makes her look (essentially getting dressed off your floor) a little more alluring than it should be. This is Pfeiffer’s golden moment, and she’s just so pretty in it. Her hair is tousled, her bra always seems to be showing, but she wears “wrong” with such panache that I’d dare it works. See also: there’s a lot of that on street style blogs these days.

I’ll see pretty much anything Michelle Pfeiffer does. She’s absolutely awe-inspiring: a chameleon that can freeze your heart and melt it again within minutes. She’s one of my favorite actresses and this, one of a string of monster hits after Scarface that included The Witches of Eastwick, Married to the Mob, and another sleeper favorite of mine, Tequila Sunrise, is one of my all-time favorite movies. I own it.

Me, channeling a little Susie Diamond moment before a date with Lucky Guy.

This look is kind of my go-to when it comes to big, romantic moments with Lucky Guy. Our first big romantic dinner date was in a red dress like this (again, MINUS THE GIANT SNOWFLAKE EARRING,) and well, it worked and it keeps on working. I figure a woman in red is like a homing signal for any red-blooded male, and whenever I need to send said signal I throw on a little red, and it’s read loud and clear.

Valentine’s Day is coming, gals. Plan accordingly. 🙂
