August 5th marks the anniversary of the death of one of my favorite style icons, Marilyn Monroe.
When I was a teenager, I happened to catch an article written about Madonna and her homage to Marilyn in the video for “Material Girl.” I went to our local video store and picked up Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, so I could see the original scene in all its glory. I was instantly hooked.
I went out that weekend and proceeded to rent every movie Marilyn Monroe had ever made. My high school prom dress was designed to mimic the dress she wore in the scene for Diamonds. I had a giant post of her likeness in my bedroom, read everything I could my hands on. I was – and am still today – a huge fan of the legacy that she’s left us.
While Marilyn remains a tragic figure, there are many lasting items she left behind for those of us who were fans of her curvacious-but-tiny blonde figure. In an age where we’re just a little too interested in porn star chic for our own good, I think a little vampy boudoir glamour is in order. Here are some of Marilyn’s amazing beauty favorites for capturing a little knock-’em-dead action of your own:
Revlon Cherries In The Snow Lipstick – It was said that she used to layer three different lip colors to get her signature crimson pout (dark liner along the outside, gradually lightening as she worked her way in,) and this was reportedly one of the products used. It’s one of the greatest cherry-red lipsticks of all time and it’s been the only red I’ve consistently purchased and worn since I was 15 years old.
Chanel No. 5 – Infamously, this fragrance rocketed into beauty history when the star replied that this perfume is all she slept in.
Erno Laszlo Skincare – Marilyn was one of the great Hollywood women who sought the expertise of this famed skincare guru. Her bedside table the night she died was evidently covered in items from this beauty genius. If you want to look like a gorgeous goddess in the morning, try the Morning Beauty Rescue from their Hollywood Collection, which was inspired by her own gorgeous beauty regimen. It contains healing gemstones to perk up a lackluster complexion from long nights or harsh lights.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Beauty Oil – This amazing product, a long-time favorite of actresses and beauty enthusiasts for its ability to gently remove heavy makeup and impurities while imparting essential moisture to the skin, is one of the great beauty products of all time and was said to be a staple of Marilyn’s regimen. Beauty editors and on-screen types are madly in love with this product. If you have yet to discover this amazing product, get involved.
Vaseline Petroleum Jelly – It’s been said that the actress would slather her entire face in the stuff and layer it with hormone cream and Nivea to product her signature glow under camera lights. As a long-time fan of the product, I don’t necessarily recommend slathering your entire face in the stuff unless you’re recovering from extreme conditions. But as a skin conditioner and tried-and-true makeup remover, it’s hard to argue that it’s a long-standing beauty favorite for a reason.
Will you try a little vampy Marilyn-esque seduction of your own? Let’s dish.
