The Quest For The Best: 3 Foundations For People Who Don’t Like To Wear Foundation

I love makeup as much as the next gal (edit: the next MAKEUP LOVING gal) but there’s one beauty product from which I RUN in most cases: foundation. Yep, you can bring a gal to the makeup counter, but if you come near me with a makeup sponge and something liquid resembling my skin tone (and sometimes not), you can watch me physically recoil in terror. Because once it’s on, I can feel it and I start scratching at it within an hour. I typically hate it.

The issue is now that I’m doing work on camera (videos are coming, y’all!) I HAVE to wear it or I look deathly ill. Which means that over the past three months, I’ve been doing some extensive research into formulas. Here’s the criteria in this Quest For The Best:

  • It has to stay put once it’s placed on. That means that it can’t sweat off or move under strenuous activity, like most Wednesdays.
  • I shouldn’t be able to feel it once it’s applied.
  • I don’t want to scratch it off EVER.
  • The condition of my skin is exceptional after wearing it. No need to repair damage done by a product.

After 3 months of testing about 25 foundations, I have found my three winners. They are as follows:

Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, available at Sephora.

Best All-Around: Make Up For Ever HD  Invisible Cover Foundation ($42) – In my book, this is the PLATINUM standard of foundations. It goes on smoothly, it stays put and I can’t feel it once it’s applied. It creates a luminous complexion that looks amazing even under hot lighting, sunlight, changing temperatures, rain (yes, RAIN) and wind. It stays put once it’s applied and I love the way it feels. The reason this is the platinum version for me is the range of colors AND the fact that my skin is in incredible condition from using it. As in, my skin is SOFTER after applying it. There aren’t enough words to express my love and adoration for how many days this has saved me.

Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation Mattying Oil Free. Available at fine department stores, like Barneys New York.

Best for Oily/Blemish-Prone/Combination Skin: Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation  ($55) – This amazing foundation also passed all the tests above and has the added bonus of anti-aging plant-derived ingredients that go to work to boost skin while the product is in place. I love it. It gives you an incredible glow and it has the ability to create a matte complexion, which is great if you’ve got a tad bit of shine.  This is PERFECT for you gals with oily, T-zone and combination skin. Also, if you tend to be slightly red, this line has a great way of masking color imbalances and imperfections. So good.

COVERGIRL + Olay Rehab 2-in-1 Liquid Foundation, available at Target.

Best Drugstore Brand: COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Foundation  and COVERGIRL + Olay Rehab  2-in-1 Foundation ($10 &$12, respectively) – Of all the drugstore brands, it’s been my experience that COVERGIRL’s complexion products are the best. Between these two, you’ve got very gentle formulas that cover beautifully and are very nice to your skin while they’re on there. I like the NatureLuxe for everyday wear (it wears almost like a tinted moisturizer) mixed with SPF for a boost. When my skin is feeling dry and I need more coverage, I like the Rehab formula with Olay built in. Both stay put through Spinning classes and long days.

So, no more hating foundation. Here are your best bets for coverage that you’ll love for all reasons and seasons. Enjoy!
